Joint EMS Training Mission With Medical Teams International Formed to Moldova

26 February, 2010

GMR's Team Moldova has formed under the direction of Lake Oswego veteran firefighter, Toby Hays.  He, along with fellow Lake Oswego firefighters, Andrew Owens and Ryan Rudge will take part in an EMS teaching mission under the authority of Medical Teams International to the Transnistria region of Moldova in Eastern Europe.  The crew will depart May 8th for two weeks and will be teaching an advanced EMS course to emergency responders living there.

Transnistria is a region in Eastern Europe that has declared independence from the country of Moldova in 1990. It roughly corresponds to the territory between the Dniester River and Ukraine.  Transnistria (officially named Transnistrian Moldovan Republic) broke away from the republic of Moldova, initiating a civil war that lasted until 1992. Transnistria is not recognized by the United Nations, however it maintains its functional autonomy with military and other support from Russia.

Medical Teams International has developed a relationship with the government and has requested teaching assistance from GMR in order to improve the quality of health care within the region.

All GMR trips are funded through tax-deductible donations and fundraising.  To help make their trip possible, please donate here.  Thanks again for your support.
