Water Rescue Training in Caraz & Cusco, Peru a Success
24 February, 2010
GMR's team of six volunteers returned home yesterday after two weeks of swift water rescue training in the country of Peru. The team traveled to both Caraz and Cusco, teaching two different organizations the basics of shore-based water rescue. The training was extremely valuable to the rescuers as Peru has been seriously affected by recent flooding killing multiple people.
In all, GMR trained 68 emergency responders from Caraz, its neighboring communities and Cusco. Additionally, three firefighters from Santa Cruz, Bolivia traveled three days by bus to attend the training. All were extremely appreciative and learned a great deal.
The students received training in the basics of river dynamics, hydraulics, swimming, self-rescue, patient packaging, throw-bag rescue, shallow water crossing, and tension diagonal river crossing.
Plans for a Fall, 2010 return are in the works to continue the training. Check out our Caraz photo gallery here!
